The owners of Chic & Unique, 318 State St., are restoring the facade of the building to its original brick exterior.
In June, Megan Warntjes, co-owner of the women’s boutique and luxury goods store, learned she was one of 500 businesses across the country to receive Backing Small Business grants from American Express and Main Street America.
Warntjes has wanted to upgrade the exterior of the building by going back to its original look since buying it in 2015. Work started on the exterior on Monday.
Chic & Unique and Bountiful Beloit were two of the 59 businesses in Illinois and Wisconsin to receive the $10,000 grants specifically to upgrade the looks of their businesses.
American Express and Main Street America launched the grant program in 2021 to help small businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its inception, small business owners have received more than $9 million through the program.
